What To Do If You Have..

1. ONLY A FEW HOURS AVAILABLE

Enjoy the center of Trieste, from the Canal Grande and Piazza Ponterosso up to Piazza Borsa and Piazza Unità. Take a walk along the Molo Audace (Audacious Pier) and lose yourself in the streets of the Old Town, exploring the narrow alleys towards Piazza Cavana and Piazza Hortis.

2. HALF A DAY

Stroll through the streets of the center, from Piazza Ponterosso with the Church of Saint Anthony (Sant'Antonio) and the Serbian Orthodox Church of Saint Spyridon (San Spiridione), up to Piazza Borsa. Enjoy the view from Piazza Unità and the Molo Audace. Walk up to the Castle of San Giusto from which you can enjoy an excellent view of the city and the gulf. Visit the Cathedral of San Giusto. On your way back, explore the streets of the Old Town and the Ghetto, look for the Tor Cucherna and the Arco di Riccardo, until you reach Piazza Cavana and Piazza Hortis.

3. ONE DAY

If you have one day available, you can see the city center (see previous section) and visit the Miramare Castle. Miramare Castle and its gardens offer a wonderful view of the city and the sea and are ideal for spending a few relaxing hours. You can walk along the waterfront, one of the favorite activities of the locals (Triestini), who also swim in this area from late spring to early autumn. If you are interested, you can add a visit to the Risiera di San Sabba, a Nazi concentration camp on Italian territory, or the Grotta Gigante (Giant Cave), the largest single-cavern cave in the world.

4. ONE DAY AND A HALF

With one and a half days available, you can enjoy the historic center, Miramare Castle, the Risiera di San Sabba, and the Grotta Gigante (see previous sections). Alternatively, you can walk along the Via Napoleonica, which connects Opicina to Prosecco and, further on, Monte Grisa. It is also worthwhile to go directly to Monte Grisa for its panoramic location. Furthermore, the city's numerous museums will allow you to spend your time immersed in local (the Bora Museum, LeTs, Sartorio Museum, De Henriquez War for Peace Museum) and international culture (Museum of Oriental Art). You can find a moment of relaxation in one of the historic cafés, such as the Antico Caffè San Marco, near the Synagogue. The nearby town of Muggia, with its narrow streets and unique atmosphere, will guarantee a few hours of leisure. It can also be reached by sea with the Delfino Verde ferry.

5. TWO OR MORE DAYS

With two or more days available, you can fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere and culture of Trieste. In addition to what is described in the previous paragraphs, you can also visit the Foiba di Basovizza, a national monument commemorating the tragedy that struck these territories after the Second World War. You can dedicate a morning to visiting the Duino Castle and walking along the Rilke Trail, which connects it to Sistiana. Other places to visit in Friuli Venezia Giulia, reachable by train, are Gorizia and Udine. In Slovenia instead, you can visit: Piran, with its Venetian architecture; Lipica and its horses (an ideal outing if you have children); the Postojna Caves; Ljubljana, both the center and the surrounding parks.

OTHER SUGGESTIONS (check the websites of the various sites to verify opening hours and days)

  • Faro della Vittoria (Victory Lighthouse) : Open only during certain periods of the year, it allows you to see the city from a high and very panoramic point.

  • Kleine Berlin: A set of tunnels excavated under the city, which were used to protect against air raids in World War II.

  • Tram di Opicina (Opicina Tram) : Historic tram that connects the center of Trieste with Opicina. Stopping at the Obelisco di Opicina (Opicina Obelisk) you can then walk the Napoleonica road.
